Platinum has spent most of 2026 trading well above palladium, reversing an order that held for most of the previous decade. For anyone deciding where to put money in the platinum-group metals, the gap raises a fair question: does the more expensive metal still offer the better value? At Big Apple Coins, at 55 West 47th Street in Manhattan's Diamond District, we buy and sell both, and we get asked this constantly.
Where the Two Metals Stand in 2026
As of early September 2026, platinum trades near $1,900 per ounce and palladium near $1,380, a spread of roughly $500, or about 1.4 ounces of palladium per ounce of platinum.
Both metals have had a violent year. Platinum reached an all-time high near $2,900 in late January before falling roughly 24% through the first half, at one point sitting about 46% off that peak. Palladium peaked near $1,870 in February and drifted lower through mid-year. Neither chart rewards anyone who bought the top.
Why Platinum Holds the Premium
Platinum's case has rested on three years of consecutive supply deficits and thin above-ground inventories. That story got more complicated in September, when the World Platinum Investment Council revised 2026 from an expected deficit to a modest surplus of about 265,000 ounces, largely because investment demand came in far weaker than forecast. Above-ground stocks are now projected to end the year around 2.01 million ounces, roughly 3.4 months of global demand.
The structural argument survives the revision. Mine production is expected to stay flat near 5.55 million ounces, with no major new projects expected for the next five to eight years, and platinum's industrial demand base is broad, autocatalysts, chemical processing, glass, jewelry, and a growing fuel-cell channel. WPIC expects a return to deficit in the second half.
What Weighs on Palladium
Palladium's problem is concentration on both sides of the ledger. Automotive catalytic converters dominate its demand, which leaves it exposed as battery-electric vehicles take share, and Russia and South Africa together account for more than 80% of primary supply, which leaves it exposed to disruption. Analysts now expect palladium's market to shift into surplus around 2028, later than the 2027 estimate published earlier this year.
That said, hybrids still need emissions systems, and gasoline vehicles will be built for years. Palladium is not going quiet.
Which Offers Better Value?
It depends on what you want the metal to do. Platinum has the deeper demand base and the tighter long-term supply picture, which is why most investors treating PGMs as a long hold favor it and why platinum bullion coins and platinum Eagle coins draw steadier retail interest.
Palladium is the cheaper entry and the higher-volatility bet. It has moved 60% in a matter of weeks on supply news before, and its concentrated supply means it can do so again. Buyers who want palladium bullion generally want that torque, and accept the downside that comes with it.
Neither is a replacement for a core gold or silver position. Both trade in markets far smaller than gold's, which means wider spreads and sharper moves in either direction.

Tips for Buying Platinum and Palladium Bullion
-
Watch the premium, not just spot. PGM premiums run higher than gold or silver because the markets are smaller. Calculate your all-in cost per ounce before you buy.
-
Expect wider bid-ask spreads. Plan to hold long enough to clear them.
-
Buy recognized products. American Platinum Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and major-refiner bars resell far more easily than obscure issues.
-
Verify authenticity. PGM counterfeits exist. Buy from an established dealer or have your pieces checked.
-
Store securely and keep your purchase records for resale.
